For anyone trying to use a USB drive, it’s important to know how to best secure it to avoid having problems with data loss or identity theft.
When designing a security setup for a USB drive, the first thing that needs to be thought about is whether or not to disable the normal operating system. Most types of USB sticks will actually boot up off the USB port itself instead of running the operating system normally. There is software available for OS X systems that can be configured to boot up from USB ports, but this will only work while the device is powered on and therefore requires an active USB connection for it to work. Therefore, the user must disable the normal operating system to prevent it from being accidentally damaged.
Most types of usb storage devices will be connected to a domain computer and will thus need to be rebooted each time they are in use. In order to determine whether this needs to be done or not, a windows registry file must be opened. This is a database file that stores all of the settings and options that the operating system has for all programs and hardware on the computer. Not all machines will boot from USB flash drives or removable disks, but they are often the preferred method. If you use a network where the operating system shares files between different computers, then it is easy to see how a USB drive can make this possible. A user could fill their computer with such a media and then upload it to a website. Once this is done, they will be able to access files that they would otherwise not be able to if the drive was disabled. However, this feature can often only be used for selected types of USB devices. If a user tries to use this feature on a removable disk or flash drive, then it will deny write access to the device.
When looking at the security of a USB drive, there are two primary areas to check. The first one is to look at the usb drive driver. This is an important part of the operating system because it is used to communicate with the device and determine what files need to be accessible via the USB connection. It is also used to tell the computer what media is attached to the device in case there is more than one device that needs to be accessed. For example, if a floppy disk device is in use, then the BIOS maps it to a specific USB drive and all files that are saved on the floppy disk are stored on this drive.
The second area to look at is to look at what is on the removable disk. This is generally done by checking the drive’s Filing Cabinet. The file system of the device will be mapped onto the drive and will appear exactly as it did on the hard disk. If there are no boot files or EFI codes on the removable disk then this is a good thing because the data cannot be accessed using any software programs. It can, however, be opened with Windows if the operating system has support for opening removable disks.
In order to determine what types of usb drives are available, it helps to look at what they are made from. Most of the USB sticks these days are constructed from either metal or plastic. The most popular types of devices are those that are constructed from metal due to the resistance to friction provided by the material. Plastic drives however, have poor shock absorption and can easily become damaged if they come into contact with any sort of rough surface. Rubber and silicone powered USB flash memory sticks are much better choices for these situations.
